What to avoid when writing a book review?
Writing book reviews is consumes a lot of time and a thankless job. In most cases the reviewer might ask why I write them. But the ultimate aim should be to make the writings of the review enjoyable by everyone. “Writing crystallizes thought” should be the motto of the reviewer. The book reviews are a way of reflecting on the book and putting some of my ideas on the work in order maybe for future reference.
Here are some of the strict don’ts while writing a article:
Avoid focusing on minor details in a book – “Nobody’s perfect” Avoid quoting too much of the author’s work in the book review Have a unique style for each book review; don’t use a standard format or checklist style. Don’t be biased towards any author based on his previous works. Feel free to express yourself. Never completely reveal the plot or the surprises incorporated in the book. Summarize the plot in a way that will answer some questions about the book, but leave other questions in the reader’s mind. Never answer all questions this discourages the author from buying the book. Never publish the book review without proof reading. Never draw reference to a book from one genre to unrelated genres Avoid lengthy plot summary instead focus on qualified opinions Don’t distort the facts stated in the book review. Avoid making the final assessment based on only a few parameters instead consider all the parameters. Don’t repeat the facts that the reader is expected to know Avoid writing in first person or slang. Reviews should always be formal rather than informal. Improve upon and/or disagree with the opinions presented by the author
Never blatantly criticize the author instead concentrate on his work. Peer reviewed articles must be unbiased. Always remember a book review id the analysis of the strengths and weakness of any book. If comparisons are done with other books than keep this section brief so that the spotlight remains on the book being reviewed.
